The Alte Post in Müllheim

Your home from home in the Markgräflerland

Back in 1986, Heinrich and Uschi Mack achieved their dream of owning a hotel in a scenic location at the foot of the famous Black Forest. Nowadays their son Fabrice, who shares his parents’ enthusiasm and passion for the job, is also part of the team. The Mack family places great importance on a close relationship with nature, environmental awareness and sustainable living – both professionally and on a personal level. By focusing on this philosophy, they have made the Alte Post a modern, forward-looking, eco-friendly hotel in the south of Baden-Württemberg. It’s a place where the entire team is serious about their responsibility towards the environment, animals and people. Every single employee is valued and there’s a real emphasis on teamwork, which has created a warm and friendly atmosphere. This family hotel, which is run with great care and attention to detail, is also one of the most charming in the Markgräflerland – an ideal accommodation – not least because it is set in a delightful natural and cultural landscape. Guests can go on long hikes, enjoy a range of different sports or simply relax. The hotel is situated in a picturesque area on the outskirts of Müllheim, which is nevertheless located ideal near Basel airport and the at the heart of the Markgräflerland winegrowing region and close to the Rhine. But it’s not just the surrounding vineyards that make this area worth visiting – the hotel’s garden and its small park are also ideal places to take a stroll, unwind and recharge. So, if you’re looking for a hotel in the South of Germany close to the famous Black Forest region and not far away from famous cities as Freiburg (Germany), Mulhouse (France) Basel (Switzerland) an, visit the Alte Post. We look forward to welcoming you!

Our rooms

Are you looking for a meeting venue in the Markgräflerland with that certain something? Why not hold your event in one of Germany’s most beautiful regions, at the Hotel Alte Post in Müllheim.

51 rooms to choose from

The Alte Post is a true gem among the hotels in the Markgräflerland. Guests can choose from several different room categories, and all rooms have been designed with great attention to detail and fitted out with elegant, premium furnishings made from natural materials.

The hotel’s interior also features exclusive designer pieces and one-off items.

Our hotel is suitable for both business and leisure, providing an atmospheric setting for perfectly organised celebrations and meetings with a personal touch. In our kitchen we place great value on sustainability. Most of the ingredients we use are sourced from farms in the region that grow their produce organically and keep animals in a species-appropriate environment.

Few of Müllheim’s hotels have a history as remarkable as that of the Alte Post. Once a post house, inn and horse-changing station, it dates back to 1745 and has survived during wartime and times of peace. In the past it hosted eminent visitors such as Margrave Charles Frederick and the poets Goethe (during his second journey to Italy) and Hoffmann von Fallersleben. Another poet, Johann Peter Hebel, who our gourmet restaurant is named after, stopped off here when travelling through Müllheim on a mail coach. The building’s ‘modern era’ began in 1955, but it was professional hotelier Heiner Mack who turned the Alte Post into a splendid location set in magnificent grounds and established its forward-looking and environmentally responsible philosophy. We take great care to run our family business in line with our core purpose: maintaining harmony with nature.

Today the Alte Post is a very special hotel in the Markgräflerland, and we’re proud of what we’ve achieved. In the early 1990s we became Germany’s first environmentally friendly hotel (German: Umwelthotel). Since then we’ve taken many small steps forward and carried out major construction projects. We’ve received various awards and gradually developed the notion of living and working in harmony with nature to create our very own philosophy. Hospitality, tranquillity and a cosy, welcoming atmosphere await you at the Alte Post, and they’re the values that the Mack family and the rest of the team stand for.

Proud to be a family-run business

We’re quite proud of what we’ve achieved here over the past 33 years – as a family and as a team working with our fantastic staff. We purchased the hotel in 1986. It had seen better days, but we redesigned it in line with our own vision, and over time it became a real haven for visitors to Müllheim. In the years that followed we were careful to always renovate and modernise the hotel responsibly, in a way that was consistent with our philosophy and respectful of the building’s history. We redesigned all the rooms, with a focus on environmental aspects and modern architecture. In 2006 we were certified by EMAS, the world’s most comprehensive environmental management system. Since then we’ve constantly been working to make the Alte Post even more environmentally friendly. We’re delighted that our son Fabrice is committed to following in our footsteps. He’s taking an active part in shaping the company management in line with our purpose and is set to take on more and more tasks in the years to come. We see a bright future ahead of us – and we look forward to welcoming you, our guests, in particular!
